• TE R弄 RANGAHAU DIRECTOR ELECTED TO ROYAL SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND
  Professor Angus Macfarlane has been named as one of the 20 new Fellows elected to the Academy of the Royal Society Te Ap膩rangi. 鈥淩esearch by Professor Angus Hikairo Macfarlane (Te Arawa) has had a transformative impact on sociocultural theory and research practice in the context of educational challenges experienced by M膩ori. His attention toward theorising issues from within both M膩ori and Western epistemologies has empowered M膩ori and non-M膩ori to frame research questions and select methodologies and data-gathering procedures that 鈥渕ake sense鈥� to M膩ori wh膩nau and educators and enable M膩ori to define the criteria for successful research outcomes.鈥�

• FULLBRIGHT听SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO TE R弄 SCHOLAR

  Professor Angus Macfarlane (Ng膩ti Whakaue) received the annual award for Research Excellence for the College of Education, Health and Human Development. The award came with a cash prize, and delighted Te R奴 members, who offer their heartfelt congratulations to Professor Macfarlane.

  Associate Professor Sonja Macfarlane (Ng膩ti Waewae, Ng膩i Tahu) was awarded the Te Tohu Pae Tawhiti Award at the annual New 成人大片Association for Research in Education conference in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field of M膩ori education. • TE R弄 RANGAHAU WINS COLLEGE AWARD
  At this year鈥檚 annual College of Education, Health and Human Development awards ceremony, Te R奴 Rangahau received the award for M膩ori Research Team of the Year for excellence in research. The award came with a cash prize, and was met with surprise and humility by Te R奴 members.
• TE R弄 FELLOW FIRST PASIFIKA RECIPIENT OF NATIONAL AWARD
  UC鈥檚 Kaiarahi Pasifika, Tufulasi Taleni (Ng膩ti H膩moa), was the first Pasifika recipient of the Rae Munro Award, which recognised excellence in his Master鈥檚 thesis. Tufulasi鈥檚 thesis is titled听E saili i tautai se agava鈥檃: A true leader masters the art of navigation鈥�:听The impact of effective leadership in raising engagement and achievement of Pasifika learners in New 成人大片schools鈥� and focused on the influence that effective educational leadership has on improving outcomes for Pasifika learners.
• ANNUAL RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM 鈥楨NGAGING AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING鈥�
  The annual M膩ori Research Colloquium was held on Friday 3 November and was hosted by the College of Education, Health and Human Development, together with the Office of the AVC M膩ori and Te R奴 Rangahau. The event was well-attended by educators, practitioners, M膩ori and Indigenous community leaders, and senior University staff. Highlights of the day include two keynote addresses 鈥� the first from illustrious M膩ori educator and leader Sir Toby Curtis (Ng膩ti Rongomai) who was welcomed at the mihi whakatau by another knight and preeminent M膩ori leader, Sir Tipene O鈥橰egan (Ng膩i Tahu). The second keynote was delivered by Dr Lana Leslie, a Kamilaroi woman from Western Sydney University.听
• RELATIONSHIP CEMENTED WITH SYDNEY ACADEMICS
  Te R奴 Rangahau scholars travelled to the University of Sydney to present at a two-day Indigenous research forum hosted by the University of Sydney鈥檚 School of Education and Social Work's Indigenous Research Collaboration. Te R奴鈥檚 delegation reciprocated a visit from academics from the University of Sydney, who visited Te R奴 in October 2016 for a two day symposium hosted by Te R奴 Rangahau.

• TE R弄 SCHOLAR WINS TOP AWARD
  Melissa Derby (Ng膩ti Ranginui), a doctoral candidate in Te R奴 Rangahau was awarded the Brownlie scholarship, which is UC鈥檚 most prestigious doctoral scholarship given to the highest ranked doctoral candidate across the University.听
• RUSSELL BISHOP DRAWS A CROWD AT ANNUAL RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM
  The Office of the AVC M膩ori, together with Te R奴 Rangahau and Aotahi School of M膩ori and Indigenous Studies, hosted Professor Emeritus Russell Bishop as the keynote speaker at this year鈥檚 M膩ori Research Colloquium. Emeritus Professor Bishop is one of Aotearoa New Zealand鈥檚 preeminent scholars, and his address to a packed auditorium was a highlight of the 2016 Colloquium.听
• PUSHKIN MASTERPIECE TRANSLATED INTO TE REO
  Te R奴 Rangahau Director Professor Angus Macfarlane and his team translated Russian poet Alexander Pushkin鈥檚 masterpiece, A Wondrous Moment I Remember, into te reo M膩ori as part of a new publication. Te Hurinui Clarke from Te R奴 Rangahau used his expertise on the challenging task. The poem was translated into 210 languages, including te reo M膩ori.

• SOCIOCULTURAL REALITIES听BOOK LAUNCH
  A new book co-edited by Te R奴 Rangahau Director Professor Angus Macfarlane, Te R奴 Rangahau Associate Professor Sonja Macfarlane, and Dr Melinda Webber from the University of Auckland was launched at Waipapa marae. Sociocultural Realities: Exploring New Horizons scrutinises ethnic and cultural considerations in the hope of helping beginning and experienced teachers, special education advisers, psychologists, university lecturers, education professionals (from early childhood through to tertiary), and families.
