Dr Beatrice Tinsley

Known as the 鈥淨ueen of the Cosmos鈥�,聽Beatrice聽Tinsley鈥檚 work has had a profound influence on what scientists know about the stars, the聽galaxy,聽and the Universe itself.聽Deciding by the age of 14 that she wanted to be an astrophysicist, she graduated with an MSc in Physics in 1961.聽Despite producing over 100 papers in her short聽14-year聽academic career,聽Beatrice聽struggled to聽receive professional recognition in聽the聽male-dominated world of academia聽in the United States.聽She became a Professor of Astronomy at Yale University, only 3 years before her death聽in 1981.

Jonathan Ring

Development of the technology for聽Zincovery聽began during Jonathan鈥檚 master鈥檚 thesis study.聽With聽the assistance of聽co-founder Professor Aaron Marshall,聽in two years,聽the idea has gone from a master鈥檚 project to a聽start-up聽employing seven people. The innovative tech recycles zinc from galvanised steel five times more efficiently than tradition methods, making it a more environmentally friendly and聽cost-effective alternative. With a global market opportunity estimated at over $10 billion per annum聽and several awards under their belt (including the Callaghan Innovation C-Prize in 2020 and聽KiwiNet鈥檚聽Breakthrough Innovator Award in 2022)聽Jonathan is only just聽getting聽started.

Sir George Julius

Growing up,聽Sir聽George聽Julius聽spent time in his聽Dad鈥檚聽workshop, sparking an early interest in engineering.聽His professional career started聽in 1896 when he聽worked聽as a railway engineer in Western Australia, before聽moving on to research work on hardwoods for the Government Railways. In his spare time, George worked on his design for an automatic totaliser, initially intended聽to be a vote-counting machine. When the government rejected the concept, the design was adapted聽for聽its聽use聽in horse racing to count bets.
